Since most facial growth and development occur during childhood, children make the most ideal candidates for dentofacial orthopedics, with the first stages of treatment beginning around age 7 or 8, while the mouth and jaw are still forming. Left uncorrected, misaligned bites may need to be corrected with surgery in adulthood. Adults may also be treated with dentofacial orthopedics, however treatment is usually more extensive due to a further developed facial structure.
